Compare the current open-trail list before the mileage. From May 15 through September 30, start with open short walks, petroglyph sites, and roadside overlooks instead of Fire Wave/Seven Wonders or White Domes.

Summer closure removes several headline trails

Nevada State Parks closes Fire Wave/Seven Wonders, White Domes, and several other exposed trails annually from May 15 through September 30. The entire park also closes for annual maintenance December 1 through December 14. Check the current park page and posted signs before driving to a trailhead; do not route around a closure or substitute an unofficial path.

If only one trail is open and comfortable

Choose contrast over mileage

White Domes compresses pale domes, red walls, sand, steps, and a narrow passage into a short loop. Petroglyph panels are the main reason to choose Mouse's Tank. Fire Wave centers on striped stone and open slickrock. None needs to become a race to the next trailhead.

Petroglyph Canyon

Give Petroglyph Canyon a slow walk

Mouse's Tank is often described as a short family walk, but the canyon contains enough rock writing for a slow walk. Scan both walls, keep hands and trekking poles away from panels, and give other visitors room to look without crowding the stone.
